Internationalization Mini-grants
2007-2008

Open to all PSU Faculty, Staff and Departments
Applications due November 16, 2007

Application Guidelines
PURPOSE
This award is administered by the Internationalization Council (IC), formally established by the Provost in spring 2007, continuing the work of the Internationalization Action Council which was established by presidential initiative in 2002. The award furthers one goal of the IC:
Increase opportunities for PSU faculty, academic professionals and staff to incorporate international dimensions into their teaching, scholarly agendas, programs and professional development.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants are invited from all PSU staff, faculty and departments. Priority will be given to proposals which focus on international awareness, international collaborations, international scholarship and/or international community-based learning. Funded proposals require evidence of matching funds from department, school/college, or other sources.
THE AWARD
This year’s total funding pool is $15,000.  The amount of each award will vary, depending upon the nature of the research proposed and the number of meritorious applications received.  In the past a typical proposal was funded at the level up to $1,000; for a list of funded proposals from 2006-07, see http://www.president.pdx.edu/Initiatives/international/grants0607.html .
THE APPLICATION
Applicants must submit a complete application including the following:

  • Project Summary: Applicants must include a non-technical abstract of the research or project (limited to 200 words or less).
  • Proposal and Selection Criteria: The proposal should include, and selection will be based upon, the following:
the clarity of purpose and rationale for the project, the project design and time frame for project implementation, evidence of applicant's ability to carry out the project, and how this project will contribute to the internationalization of PSU (limited to three double-spaced pages).
  • Budget: Award funds may be used for research materials, research assistants, or other purposes directly related to the international activity. All funding must be in accordance with the new State of Oregon requirements and restrictions. Budgets normally include personnel, services and supplies with narrative justifications for each item. Similarly, the activities and role of research assistants must be detailed and clearly justified in this section. The budget may include request for travel support; under most circumstances, travel support may not exceed fifty percent of the grant request.
  • Pending Support: Please state what funds you are requesting for this project from other sources. Be sure to specify the name of the granting agency and the amount of the award. Matching support is a required part of the successful application.
  • Brief Vita and Pertinent Publication: List educational background specifying the degrees earned, dates and institutions. Also list all academic appointments in the last five years, including post-doc if applicable (limited to one page per team member).

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE AND DEADLINES
Email your complete application to Jingping Li (jli@pdx.edu) by 5:00 pm, Friday, November 16, 2007. Funding decisions will be announced in December 2007 and must be encumbered or expended by June 30, 2008. If research involves use of human subjects, a copy of the PSU Human Subjects Research Review Committee approval letter needs to be submitted prior to release of funding.
SELECTION PROCESS
A subcommittee, from the President's Internationalization Action Council, will review and select proposals. Applications will be judged primarily on the soundness of the project and project design; the degree to which this project will enhance internationalization at PSU; the degree to which this work will contribute to a larger body of knowledge; the feasibility of completing the project within the timeframe proposed; and the qualifications of the applicant(s).  Priority will be given to proposals that increase opportunities for PSU faculty, academic professionals and staff to incorporate international dimensions into their teaching, scholarly agendas, programs and professional development.
