Meeting notes from November 15, 2006Agenda A presentation was given by Jean Tuomi and Julie Smith on the new identity
at PSU. They are seeking to have all documents showing PSU in the same style
and manner. The main focus is to get the PSU logo on our documents, especially
with items that get wide public distribution, and using the correct fonts. They're
willing to help you design your publications. Also a civic engagement message
is most important from PSU's perspective. Drop-in at CH 325 for office hours,
3-4 daily so that University Communications experts can help you with flyers
and other publications. Ad's and large distribution publications are the most
important to get reviewed by UCO. Options also include meeting with us. There
are two templates that you can download from the website: www.pdx.edu.ucomm.
You can order stationery at this website and review the PSU graphics standards
manuel, the style guide, the PSU color palette, etc. Many questions were asked and discussions ensued: If you have big events like the Saudi visit, talk to Joan Barnes.
Patrice: Finished with Canada week. Not a lot of on-campus involvement but
enough. Jason: Alyse: Working on getting students ready for Winter & Spring programs. This is International Education week. See the PSU website for events. Working on re-entry workshops. PSU magazine will feature our photo contest for the January issue. Ron: Just back from CIEE in Sevilla, Spain, Prof Ostlund went along. Katherine: Working on proposals for next summer programs. Jeff: Ended summer season on Sept 11, then started some fall programs. Getting ready for spring and summer programs Judy: Paperwork and planning, enjoyed the Disneyland trip with our students. Debra: Working on preparations for Fulbright Teach Exchange interviews on Dec. 2. Holding NSEP info sessions. Working on lots of reimbursements, the usual paperwork. Martha: Lots of paperwork, name badges for International Ed Fair. Blythe: Working on getting students out for winter/spring. Charitable Fund Drive information is here so please fill out top sheet and return to Blythe. No pressure, but lots of good information and opportunities to give. Christina: Waiting for numbers to come in, apparently information counts are changing so we don't know for sure how many international students we have. As for paying tuition vs those not. H-4s maybe shouldn't be counted in that. Paula is trying to define with Kathi Ketcheson and the state as to how we decide to count. We hope to compare apples to apples. Todd: Busy reviewing applications for the OUS programs coming in from around
the system John: Saudi art exhibit is in SMSU 296-298 today until 9 and tomorrow til 4 pm. Second night of lectures are tonight in 294 SMSU. Speakers will by Dr. Long and Dr. Selwa Hazza, Arab woman doctor of the year. Please try to come and bring others. High level operation so come. Gil: AUC note to Ron - work in progress. Nurses, Saudi-Mr. Saba, Friends of Saudi Arabia, the reorganization of nursing in that country, maybe some exploration of bringing these students for ISPs nursing program. Anne George is in Australia but will be working on a welcome page in 5 languages on the PSU website. So we are about to enter a contract with a translation agency, Spanish Japanese, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Korea languages will be the first 5, for a welcome page only at this time. We've moved forward with ACE on FIPSE grant to assess int'l learning, Tia Thornton will be the lead on that. It's part of a national consortium to deepen student understanding of international issues. Had two visiting delegations: Delegation from Suzhou was also on campus led by a vice mayor (his daughter will enter PSU soon). Sustainability was the discussion topic and it's moving along further but still in a talking stage. Kristin worked hard on this event as did others in the office. Gil will be traveling a bit more in moths ahead: Boise State - Internationalization meetings, Washington DC - FIPSE, Japan - conference, plus he'll be taking time off with family. If anything urgent, contact will continue via email. A couple grants are brewing. CLAC was successful last month. FLL may apply to Dept of Ed for further grants for across campus funding. A translation program -funding may be available there. Looking at a unit that can do translation work done, maybe up to as many as 45 languages represented. !! CFD - worthy cause, easy cuz it comes right out of your paycheck. Thanks to Blythe for taking this on. Gil said he knows you are all working really hard. On the international student
numbers we're seeing a 9.6 % increase but on pins and needles as we wait for
the final numbers. How about bowling? How about mini-golf? To rainy for golf right now but we'll do it in the spring/summer. So maybe bowling will be the next event.
