IPSL - Service-Learning in Guayaquil, Ecuador
Guayaquil, Ecuador’s main port and largest city, is a bustling coastal urban center known for its friendly people and vibrant nightlife. It offers a tropical climate, a newly revitalized waterfront (Malecon), and is the gateway to the Galapagos and some of Ecuador’s most beautiful beaches. It also offers an encounter with dramatic contrasts of wealth and poverty, and the social issues generated through that disparity. With about 2.5 million inhabitants, Guayaquil has experienced tremendous population growth in recent years; parts of the city have undergone impressive redevelopment while other areas of the city have become vast tracts of squatter housing lacking basic urban services.
Volunteer service in Guayaquil immerses students in the lives of local people while caring for those in need. It offers a deeper understanding of Ecuadorian life in a way that goes beyond the experience in traditional study abroad programs. It also facilitates mastery of Spanish and provides the opportunity to develop leadership skills. The program is based at Universidad Espiritu Santo (UEES), where students take required courses in Spanish language, Ecuadorian social issues, and any of the optional electives offered.
