IPSL - Service-Learning in Thailand
In the heart of Southeast Asia, Thailand is largely a Buddhist land of many contrasts: gorgeous countryside of rice fields, mountains, and hills; ancient temples and bustling city life; and a wide population variety including many tribal groups and immigrants. Chiang Mai, a charming city with roots dating back to the 13th century, is nestled in the cool and beautiful mountains of northern Thailand. It is the second largest city in the country and has the advantages of a city but with the feel of a small town where the old style of Thai living is preserved.
Program Focus
Volunteer service in Chiang Mai immerses students in the lives of local people while caring for those in need. It offers a deeper understanding of Thai life in a way that goes beyond the experience in traditional study abroad programs. It also facilitates mastery of the Thai language and the opportunity to develop leadership skills. The program is based at Payap University, a fully accredited private university. The academic program includes four required courses including Thai language, Thai cultural foundations, Service-learning in Thai institutions, and an elective on Thai life or fine arts.
