This 6-credit, four-week course (INTL 499/505: _ International _[Field] Experience) will include lectures by well-known scholars on Turkish history, politics, society, and economics. Afternoons will include visits to historical sites, museums, other relevant locations in Istanbul, or to meet with government officials, political and religious leaders, and business organizations. Class lectures will be at the Institute of Middle East at Marmara University for two weeks. We will also spend one week travelling in Ankara, Konya, Gocek and Izmir.

Turkey has a population of more than 70 million and is one of the most diverse countries in the Middle East, at the intersection of Europe and Asia, with many different political, religious and ethnic groups. Over the last decade the Turkish economy has been one of the greatest examples of growth in a developing market, and this has fueled important social and political changes. In this course, we seek to understand and explore these trends in Turkish society.

Draft Itinerary:

  • International Component: June 17 – July 8, 2013

    Participants will spend two weeks in Istanbul and Marmara University developing an understanding of the socioeconomic conditions there. Daily activities will include class discussions and lectures, followed by guest speakers and visits to related sites, such as political parties, NGOs, think-tanks, universities, museums, government ministries, and religious sites. Lunch will be the big group meal of the day and most evenings will be unscheduled after 5pm.
