F-1 Immigration
How to Obtain F-1 Visa Status
- Apply and be accepted for admission to PSU.
- Provide documentation of sufficient financing for at least one year of study, including living expenses and tuition.
- PSU will issue you an I-20 document.
- Sign your I-20 and use it to apply for your F-1 visa at the US Consulate in your home country.
After Receiving Your F-1 Visa
- Use your I-20 and F-1 visa to enter the US up to 30 days before the start of classes.
- After arriving in Portland you must check-in with International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) bringing your passport, I-94, and I-20 documents, within the first two weeks of class.
- Attend the mandatory orientation to learn more about adapting to life at PSU and your F-1 legal obligations.
- Be responsible for maintaining your status to ensure that you are able to complete your studies.
- Use this site as a resource for learning more about your documentation, employment, and travel benefits.
ISSS is required to report information about its international student population to the Department of Homeland Security on a quarterly basis. Students are responsible for maintaining their own immigration status, so it is very important that you understand your obligations.
Contact an international advisor at ISSS with any questions regarding your F-1 visa status.
