J-1 Student Visa Status
The J-1 student visa status is designated for degree and non-degree PSU students participating in official exchange programs with Portland State University or students sponsored substantially by funding from any source other than personal or family funds.
How to Obtain J-1 Visa Status
- Apply and be accepted for admission to PSU.
- If you will study at PSU as an exchange student on an official exchange program, please contact your home university international office for the application process.
- Provide documentation of your financing for the duration of your stay up to one year, including living expenses and tuition.
- PSU will issue you an DS-2019 document and send it to you.
- Sign your DS-2019 and use it to apply for your J-1 visa at the US Consulate in your home country.
After Receiving Your J-1 Visa
- You may use your DS-2019 and J-1 visa to enter the US up to 30 days before the start date listed on your DS-2019.
- Attend the mandatory International Student Orientation to learn more about adapting to life at PSU and your J-1 legal obligations.
- Be responsible for maintaining your status to ensure that you are able to complete your studies.

Orientation
