International Student Mentoring Program (ISMP)

The ISMP is designed to provide ongoing assistance to incoming international students that have been admitted to Portland State University (PSU). The program’s task is to assist new international students in the transition from their respective countries to our university. The transition from one country to another is often complicated and frustrating and this program is designed to smooth out this process. The aim of the International Student Mentor Program is to enhance the international student experience at Portland State University through personal interaction in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

We have just hired our new 2009/2010 International Student Mentors. Their bios will be available for you to read in September.

Do you want to mentor new international students next year 2010-11?

This is a GREAT opportunity to get some important cross-cultural/intercultural leadership experience while in Portland. You will be a vital contributor to a very diverse group of mentors as well as gain valuable insight into the difficult and often confusing process of cultural adjustment. The commitment is July – November to serve as a 1) support person, 2) resource to explain and introduce new students to PSU services and structures, and 3) cultural bridge to ease them into American culture and Portland life. During July/Aug we use mentors to provide a support via e-mail for incoming international students.

If you have some questions about the ISMP program or application process please contact Jill Townley at .
