English Language & American Culture
We offer the following English Language and American Culture Programs:
Winter, Spring, and Summer Programs for University Groups
A 1 to 4-week intensive English language and American culture program that is customized for each group. Programs typically include morning classes and afternoon and/or weekend activities and excursions. Upon request, programs can incorporate specialized lectures, content, guest speakers, industry visits, excursions, etc. Housing arrangements include homestay families, campus dormitories (summer only) or a combination of both.
Winter, Spring, and Summer Programs for High School Groups
A 1 to 3-week intensive English language and American culture program that is customized for each group. Morning ESL classes are complemented by afternoon and/or weekend cultural and recreational activities. Students stay with Portland-area host families.
Semester/Year Abroad at PSU for University Groups
Programs vary in length from 3 to 12 months and follow PSU’s quarter system calendar. Groups enroll full-time in PSU’s Intensive English Language Program (IELP)or combine part-time study in the IELP with customized American culture, computer, PE, and other skill-based or content-based courses. Participants live in dormitories or with host families.
“America Plus” Program for University Students
This 4-week open-enrollment program is offered twice a year, at the end of February and in mid-August. It is available to individual students or small groups from specific institutions. Classes include intensive English language and American culture offered in the mornings, “plus” a choice of an afternoon seminar track. Previous “plus” tracks have been
cross-cultural communication, American business practices, American pop culture, hospitality management, and other topics. The plus seminar course features guest lectures from industry, site visits, and practical experiential learning. Participants stay with homestay families.
