Information for Prospective and Current Employees

H-1B

PSU uses the H-1B visa for hiring foreign nationals in temporary professional positions. H-1B visas are designed for “specialty occupations” defined as those requiring “theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge” and a bachelor’s degree or higher. H-1B is appropriate for university faculty and researchers.

Other Options for Employing Foreign Nationals

J-1 Scholar

Many temporarily employed foreign national teachers and researchers are also eligible for J-1 Scholar (Exchange Visitor) visa status. Eligibility requirements, application procedures, and advantages differ from H-1B. See the J-1 Prospective Scholars section for more information.

TN Status

TN is a temporary employment visa status available to Canadian and Mexican citizens for periods of up to three years. It is employer-specific and is only available for certain occupations.
