I’m in Taiwan

Rebecca Kwiatoski shares her experience of studying abroad in Taiwan. “Taiwan has been great so far, from the night markets to the CIEE field trips it has all been a blast.”

Taiwan has been great so far, from the night markets to the CIEE field trips it has all been a blast. I can’t wait to see what is going to happen next. I will admit some things take some getting used to. Bargaining for everything and the amount of random unexpected spectacles you will see will definitely take time, however it all adds to the experience of studying abroad. Never before in my life did I feel like any type of food could be put in front of me and I will not even have to blink an eye. (However I still can’t choke down intestine.)

Sometimes it all can be a bit overwhelming, but then I just try and remember that, “I’m in Taiwan!” It should be an exhilarating experience, not a scary one. It all just takes some getting used to. The program itself has been great to us; they continually help in any way they can to aid you in every function from losing your ATM card to finding what class to take. Everyone here is truly a great crew.

I am sincerely happy that I decided to take this opportunity. For all of those, “I wish I could’ve done that” I have only one thing to say: JUST DO IT! That’s all it takes to have the most amazing experience of your life. I am so happy I did and can’t wait to see what else comes next.

So far I recommend taking some deep breaths in and going out on your own. Taiwan is spectacular and it just takes a few, “I can do this” phrases to get out and see things on your own. So far it has propelled me to do things I have never thought imaginable such as, trying a giant BBQ squid on a stick (I’m talking the size of my head here) and being witness to major political events such as the battle between Taiwan independence and the reunification with China. These are things that I will be able to tell my grandkids some day that I actually saw. Who else can say that? That is what being here is all about, broadening your horizons and being able to experience something more to life.
